One of the most important transitions families experience is the shift from school-based support to adult services. It’s also one of the most confusing.

The Difference Families Don’t Always Expect

During the school years, services are provided through the educational system. Schools are responsible for delivering supports outlined in your child’s educational plan through graduation — whether that happens at age 18 or age 21.

Adult services work very differently.

Instead of education-based eligibility, adult supports are based on qualification and funding approval. This means families must:

• Apply for services through the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD)

• Complete eligibility and functional assessments

• Secure Medicaid approval

• Navigate multiple steps before services can begin

And here’s what often catches families off guard:

Even though you can start applying at age 18, services typically do not begin until age 21.

The approval process itself can take six months or longer.

Without early planning, families may find themselves facing a gap in support right when their child graduates.
